Water marbled nails

Nicely manicured fingernails don't fit into my lifestyle, but there's an entire subculture of nail art happening out there. Ten tiny canvasses, perfectly stamped, bejewelled and entered into competitions by nail artists all around the world.

Water marbled nails look like the easiest to accomplish at home with whatever Sally Hansen polish you have kicking around.

Inexpensive, fast and simple. You probably won't mind so much when the polish chips off the next day.

Monday

Repetto Ziti

If it doesn't say hand marbled, then it probably isn't hand marbled.

Since they don't tell you to expect a pair slightly different
than the picture offers, I suspect they're
hand marbled reproductions.
They can be yours for  $455.00
From Repetto

You can marble leather and get great results,
but you have to know what you're doing.
Different inks, dyes & paints react differently with
various leathers and leather finishing methods.

Friendship books

In 1453 when Constantinople became Istanbul, marbled papers started to become more popular in the western world.
100 years later, students at German universities collected autographs of their friends and professors in books called Album Amicorum.  The pages of these little books were hand marbled in subtle colours allowing the signatures to show.  The marbled papers were collected and traded among the students, and then sent off to the book binder to be assembled into the Album Amicorum.

Here's an antique autograph book known as  "Das Grosse Stammbuch" of Philipp Hainhofer, a man who used his connections as a clothier to various princes.
He kept busy working as a diplomat (spy) during the Thirty Years War.
Phil put this together between 1596 and 1633:

Someone picked it up recently up at Christies Auctioneers for  $2,368,000.00
The photo above belongs to Christies, of course.

Before now, customs and habits lived on longer
and were passed down to succeeding generations.
550 years later, you could walk into a Five & Dime store and get this:

Now we have Facebook.

HAND MARBLED GOODIES GALORE

Welcome to the first post in my brand new blog.

The title is a give away.  In this blog I want to focus on all things hand marbled.
It's surprising how little there is about it on the internet.
Googling it doesn't help a whole lot because you have to sift through an awful lot of stuff that has nothing at all to do with hand marbled.

Pictures tell the story, so lets just jump into the world of hand marbled on the internet.

These bookbinding papers are from carfax-abbey -antiquities on EBay.
10 - 9x12 sheets in traditional patterns like Non Pariel, Peacock and Stone.
They seem to be the real thing, done by someone with a solid knowledge of the craft and care about the art.
